Storytelling

01

App overview and objectives

An interactive explainer that takes the reader from personal choices to planetary systems: a footprint calculator that feeds a scrolling narrative showing exactly where individual and collective action diverge.

02

The problem worth solving

Climate communication oscillates between guilt about straws and despair about systems. Connecting a reader's own numbers to systemic levers is the honest middle that actually changes behaviour and voting.

03

Target audience

  • Primary — Concerned but overwhelmed general readers.
  • Secondary — Teachers and campaigners needing an explainer they can trust.

04

Roles and permissions

  • Visitor — read-only public pages, can sign up.
  • Member — owns their own records, cannot see other users' data.

05

Core features

  • Footprint calculator using regional emission factors
  • Scroll narrative that reuses the reader's own numbers in every scene
  • Data visualisations comparing individual, corporate and policy levers
  • Action list ranked by actual impact for the reader's situation
  • Sources panel with the full methodology open
  • Shareable result card

Deliberately later

  • Annual re-check with progress
  • Local policy tracker by region
  • Organisation-level version

06

Technical stack

React with scroll-driven visualisation, calculations in the browser from a versioned emission-factor dataset.

Why: Client-side calculation means no personal data is transmitted, which removes the privacy objection to a detailed questionnaire.

Alternatives: Server-side calculation with saved profiles (enables tracking over time, requires accounts and trust) or a static article (simple, not personal).

07

Conceptual data model

EmissionFactor — category, region, unit, value, source, year

CalculatorInput — session answers by category

Scene — order, narrative, visualisation type, data binding

Action — description, impact estimate, effort, applicability rules

Source — title, publisher, url, retrieved date

08

Integrations

  • Open emissions datasets
  • Charting library
  • Image generation for share cards

09

UI design principles

  • Scroll is the narrative device: each section reveals one beat of the story.
  • Full-bleed imagery alternating with quiet text-only moments to let the reader breathe.
  • Always offer a skip-to-summary path for readers who want the facts fast.

10

Security considerations

  • No account and no server storage of answers by default.
  • Share cards are generated locally or from anonymised values only.
  • Publish the dataset version and last update so claims are auditable.

11

Development phases

Phase 1 — Prove the core

  • — Footprint calculator using regional emission factors
  • — Scroll narrative that reuses the reader's own numbers in every scene
  • — Data visualisations comparing individual, corporate and policy levers
  • — Static content and design system in place
  • — Basic analytics

Phase 2 — Make it real

  • — Action list ranked by actual impact for the reader's situation
  • — Sources panel with the full methodology open
  • — Shareable result card
  • — Accounts, sign-in and password reset
  • — Empty, loading and error states everywhere

Phase 3 — Polish and launch

  • — Performance, accessibility and SEO pass
  • — Legal pages, contact route and 404 handling
  • — Wire up: Open emissions datasets
  • — Wire up: Charting library

Phase 4 — Grow

  • — Annual re-check with progress
  • — Local policy tracker by region
  • — Organisation-level version

12

Challenges and solutions

Risk — Footprint calculators shift blame from producers to individuals

Solution — Make the systemic comparison the narrative's core, not a footnote.

Risk — Data goes stale and undermines credibility

Solution — Version the factor dataset, show its year on screen, and schedule an annual review.

Risk — Complexity loses readers

Solution — Every scene answers one question in one sentence before any chart appears.

13

Future expansion

  • Localised editions with national datasets
  • School curriculum version
  • Company footprint tool
