01

App overview and objectives

A learning planet for 5-10 year olds where lessons are short missions, progress is a visible world that grows, and parents get a weekly report they trust. Learning outcomes matter more than screen time.

02

The problem worth solving

Children abandon educational apps that feel like homework and parents abandon apps that feel like slot machines. A world that grows with mastery, plus honest parental reporting, satisfies both sides.

03

Target audience

  • Primary — Children aged 5-10 practising literacy and numeracy.
  • Secondary — Parents choosing and monitoring the app, and teachers assigning practice.

04

Roles and permissions

  • Visitor — read-only public pages, can sign up.
  • Member — owns their own records, cannot see other users' data.

05

Core features

  • Short mission-based lessons (3-5 minutes) with immediate feedback
  • Adaptive difficulty that repeats concepts a child struggles with
  • A growing world map where mastery unlocks new regions
  • Reward system with collectibles instead of streaks and timers
  • Parent dashboard with mastery by topic, time spent and suggested offline activities
  • Offline mode so missions work without connectivity

Deliberately later

  • Teacher classroom mode
  • Sibling profiles
  • Localised content in Bangla and other languages

06

Technical stack

React with a strong offline cache, Postgres for progress, separate authenticated parent area.

Why: Children's sessions must never fail on a weak connection, and parent data must sit behind real authentication that a child cannot pass.

Alternatives: Native mobile app (better store discovery and offline, higher cost) or a pure web game (cheapest, weaker retention hooks).

07

Conceptual data model

ChildProfile — nickname, age band, avatar, parent account

Skill — subject, concept, prerequisites, difficulty band

Mission — skill, activity type, content, duration

Attempt — child, mission, correctness, time, hints used

Mastery — child, skill, level, last practised

ParentReport — week, summary metrics, recommendations

08

Integrations

  • Audio narration for pre-readers
  • Payments for family plans
  • Email for weekly reports

09

UI design principles

  • Rounded shapes, bright accent colours, springy micro-animations on every tap.
  • Reward progress visually — confetti, badges, character reactions.
  • Copy is short, warm and second-person; never corporate.

10

Security considerations

  • No child-directed advertising, no third-party trackers, no public profiles or chat.
  • Parent gate on all account, payment and settings screens.
  • Collect the minimum data possible and comply with children's privacy rules by design.

  • — Short mission-based lessons (3-5 minutes) with immediate feedback
  • — Adaptive difficulty that repeats concepts a child struggles with
  • — A growing world map where mastery unlocks new regions

  • — Reward system with collectibles instead of streaks and timers
  • — Parent dashboard with mastery by topic, time spent and suggested offline activities

  • — Empty, loading and error states everywhere

Phase 3 — Polish and launch

  • — Sibling profiles
  • — Localised content in Bangla and other languages

12

Challenges and solutions

Risk — Engagement mechanics become manipulative

Solution — No infinite loops or loss-framed streaks; sessions end with a natural stopping point.

Risk — Content production is the real cost

Solution — Build an authoring tool early so teachers, not developers, create missions.

Risk — Parents cannot judge progress

Solution — Report in plain sentences — 'can add two-digit numbers with carrying' — not percentages.

13

Future expansion

  • School licensing
  • Printable offline workbooks
  • Speech-based reading assessment
