Unconventional Virtual Museum

A 3D-like museum site where visitors walk through rooms of digital art using keyboard navigation and ambient sound.

01

App overview and objectives

A museum you navigate spatially rather than by menu: rooms, corridors and vantage points, with audio narration and curator notes. The goal is to make small collections feel monumental and worth an unhurried visit.

02

The problem worth solving

Small galleries and independent artists have great work and terrible websites — endless grids that flatten context. Space, sequence and sound restore the curation that a grid destroys.

03

Target audience

  • Primary — Art lovers browsing at home who want depth, not a feed.
  • Secondary — Independent artists and small galleries needing an exhibition venue with no rent.

04

Roles and permissions

  • Visitor — read-only public pages, can sign up.
  • Member — owns their own records, cannot see other users' data.

05

Core features

  • Spatial navigation between rooms with keyboard, scroll and touch support
  • Artwork detail view with zoom, materials, dimensions and curator note
  • Audio guide per room with transcript
  • Curated exhibitions with a defined path and an ending
  • Guest book and visit counter per exhibition
  • Accessible list mode that presents the same content linearly

Deliberately later

  • Live guided tours with a curator
  • Artist submission portal
  • Timed ticketed exhibitions

06

Technical stack

React with a lightweight WebGL or CSS-3D layer, static asset hosting for high-resolution images, a small CMS for exhibitions.

Why: Most of the experience is images and text; a full game engine is overkill and would ruin load times on mobile networks.

Alternatives: A full 3D engine (gorgeous, heavy, poor SEO) or a plain gallery grid (fast, but loses the whole point).

07

Conceptual data model

Exhibition — title, curator, dates, room order, cover

Room — exhibition, name, wall layout, ambience audio

Artwork — room, title, artist, year, media, hi-res image, note

Artist — bio, portrait, links, works

Visit — exhibition, anonymous session, path taken, duration

08

Integrations

  • Image CDN with progressive loading
  • Audio hosting
  • Optional print-on-demand shop

09

UI design principles

  • Break the grid on purpose: overlapping layers, oversized type, one surprising interaction per screen.
  • Motion carries meaning — elements should morph between states instead of hard-cutting.
  • Keep exactly one experimental idea per page so the interface stays usable, not chaotic.

10

Security considerations

  • Watermark or tile high-resolution images to discourage wholesale download.
  • Moderate guest book entries before publishing.
  • No personal data collected from visitors beyond anonymous analytics.

Development phases

Phase 1 — Prove the core

  • — Spatial navigation between rooms with keyboard, scroll and touch support
  • — Artwork detail view with zoom, materials, dimensions and curator note
  • — Audio guide per room with transcript
  • — Static content and design system in place
  • — Basic analytics

Phase 2 — Make it real

  • — Curated exhibitions with a defined path and an ending
  • — Guest book and visit counter per exhibition
  • — Accessible list mode that presents the same content linearly
  • — Accounts, sign-in and password reset
  • — Empty, loading and error states everywhere

Phase 3 — Polish and launch

  • — Performance, accessibility and SEO pass
  • — Legal pages, contact route and 404 handling
  • — Wire up: Image CDN with progressive loading
  • — Wire up: Audio hosting

Phase 4 — Grow

  • — Live guided tours with a curator
  • — Artist submission portal
  • — Timed ticketed exhibitions

12

Challenges and solutions

Risk — Heavy assets kill mobile performance

Solution — Progressive image tiles, aggressive lazy loading, and a low-bandwidth mode.

Risk — Spatial navigation confuses first-timers

Solution — A short guided intro path and an always-available map and list view.

Risk — Accessibility of a spatial UI

Solution — Full keyboard navigation and a parity list mode from day one, not as an afterthought.

13

Future expansion

  • Ticketed premium exhibitions
  • VR headset support
  • Museum partnership programme
